Inviting Vanilla Candies, Pralines, and more:
Frostings are sweet often creamy glazes made from sugar with an added liquid such as water or milk, that is often enriched with ingredients such as butter, egg whites or vanilla flavorings and is used to cover or decorate baked goods, such as cakes or cookies. Pastry bags are then used to apply the frosting to cakes, pies, muffins or other baked goods. A high-quality reusable pastry bag is often made from tightly woven nylon, polyester, rubber or waterproofed cotton. Medium quality bags are similar, except they are not so tightly woven and may let some contents seep through the weave or the seams. After use, a reusable bag is washed by hand and hung open to dry. A high-quality bag may last for many years.

The Vanilla Pod Makes The Vanilla Frosting Superb
Author: John S. Rhodes
The history of cakes and frosting can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. However the cakes those times were very different that the cakes we know today. Cakes in those days were more like sweet breads as they were sweetened with honey and the cake often contained ingredients like raisins, nuts and dried fruits in them. Vanilla frosting was the most common type of frosting used but that was also not the same typed of frosting we know today is was more of glazing.
The food historians have stated tha the first culture to have shown advanced baking skills were the ancient Egyptians and if you check the Oxford dictionary one will note that the word cake dates back to the 13th century and the word cake was derived from the old Nordic word kaka.
Fruit cakes and the typical gingerbread were made by medieval Europeans as these types of delicacies kept fresh and lasted for months and the first round type of cake materialized here in the 1700's. Frosting was made from sugar, vanilla pods and egg white and this mixture was usually boiled and then poured onto the cake.
Vanilla as we know it today is delicious and will enhance the flavor of any plain sponge cake as well as cup cakes. Here is a very simple and tasty recipe:
Vanilla Frosting
- 6 tablespoons of softened butter,
- 3 cups of refined icing sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence and 1 vanilla pod
- 2 tablespoons of condensed milk
- 4 tablespoons of fresh whole milk
Over a low heat warm the milk and vanilla pod and do not allow the milk to boil.
Beat the butter and condensed milk together in a mixing bowl until fluffy and gradually add the icing sugar. Add the vanilla essence. Beat the milk in slowly and remove the vanilla pod.
Vanilla and condensed milk are a really stunning combination. This frosting is really good.
